Corniglia is different in comparison to the other villages of Cinque Terre. As a matter of fact, it has a strong agricultural heritage that makes it more linked to the land than to the sea. However, as in the other villages, nature contributes to create wonderful and breathtaking landscapes.
Thanks to the middle and dominant position of this village, it is possible to admire a complete view on the surrounding area. There are two panoramic viewpoints not to be missed: the one on the Fosso square, from where it is possible to see all the oriental part of Cinque terre, and the one called “Belvedere”, located at the end of Via Fieschi. the main road of the village. From here, there is an amazing view of the occidental part up to the Promontory of Mesco. Looking towards the mount, it is possible to see San Bernardino district where the Shrine of Nostra Signora delle Grazie is located. It was recently built and is the result of a 19th century renovation of a 15th century chapel.
At the top of the village there is the San Pietro church, one of the more interesting religious building in the area. It was built in the 14th century in a Ligurian-gothic style and it also embeds the façade of an older sacred building of the 11th century on the north side.
In comparison to the surrounding villages, it is a bit harder to reach Corniglia. For those coming by ferry or by train, it is necessary to take the “Lardarina”, a long brick stairway made up by 33 flights and 377 steps.
Together with Monterosso, Corniglia is the village that has more bathing coastline. Here there are 3 beaches where it is possible to swim and relax. The “spiaggione” of Corniglia is the second biggest beach of Cinque Terre. It is about 1 km long, it is made up by pebbles and gravel and it is easily reachable with a 5 minute walk from the train station. It is important to mention also the Guvano beach, unfortunately reachable only by boat.
For scuba-diving lovers, the 18 meters deep sea bottoms are really interesting because the ravines created by the landslide that gives the name to the beach is a good shelter for morays, big conger eels, small lobsters and goatfishes. Among the rocks located in the sea bottoms, it is possible to observe examples of Pinna Nobilis covered by colorful sponges.
